Wat Suae Ten วัดเสือเตียว

The Blue Temple is a newer addition to this city’s religious attractions. Wat Rong Seau Ten translates to The Dancing Tigers Temple. The area was formerly inhabited by tigers along the Mekok River which flows through the north of the city. Construction started in 2005 and the main temple was opened in 2016. Designed by Phuttha Kabkaew, a former student of the White Temple artist, Chalermchai Kositpipat. The influence is clearly visible, this is a more traditional styled establishment however.

Internally, the blue coloured Buddha sits with crossed legs and his hand touching the earth, depicting the transition to enlightenment. The statue is in fact white, the reflection of the deep blue interior walls causes this effect. Paintings on the walls catalogue the life of the Lord Buddha and his teachings. Nagas, dragons, Bhuddist guardians adorn the temple and also extend into the grounds.

Work continues with statues, sculptures and outbuildings being added to the site. This is a smaller temple and the grounds are not suitable for extensive parking areas. I found the area to the rear of the temple has adequate parking, but isn’t easily found from the main road. This has become a popular tourist spot, busses packed with visitors is now a frequent event.

Situated to the north of the city, taxi or tuk tuk is the best option for travelers, unless hardy types can walk this in 20+ mins from the clocktower area. There is no entrance fee and is open from 08.30-17.00 daily. Be aware that this is a religious site and a more conservative dress-code is expected. Ladies especially should cover legs and shoulders. Shoes are not worn inside the temple building itself, as with all temples in the Kingdom. Chiwit Thamma Da restaurant is close by for an exquisite meal as is Manorom Coffee both on the banks of the Mekok River for more photo opportunities.
