Phu Chi Fah
Phu Chi Fah is another famous Chiang Rai landmark for it's spectacular views from high up on this mountain. Overlooking Laos, it is simply breath-taking and a landscape photographers dream.
As part of the Phu Sang National Park, in the east of the province in Thoeng District. At up to 1,628m above sea level at it's highest point, the climate is cooler in summer and chilly in winter. This coolness produces beautiful flowers and shrubs, extending into the valley view.
In the winter, you see above the mist in the valley, the sun rising for a spectacular sight. Thais come here in their droves during the winter to experience the cool climate. SUVs packed with tents for camping come from all over Thailand. Careful if driving, the mountain roads up here in the province aren't like the Bangkok traffic jams.
Any motorcyclists will be thrilled travelling to Phu Chi Fah. Not for the faint-hearted as the hairpin roads descend and rise steeply. I've slid down sideways before now, gets the pulse racing for sure. Sometimes a technical ride, the sweeping bends and little amount of traffic up here in the province are some of the reasons bikers from all over the world come here.
Car parking is at the bottom of the final 20 min walk up to the peak. A selection of food stalls and souvenirs stretch along one side. On the route here, you will pass many eateries and guest houses and of course camping sites which swell in numbers during the winter. The best photo of the cliff itself needs to be taken away from this location of course.
